Skeleton brings the works of six artists into dialogue with a former commercial building that has undergone multiple reinventions during its lifespan. Since it was opened as a modernist Esso gas station in 1961, the building has been layered with postmodern additions in the 1980s–90s and transformed into a beloved music club in 2010(–2016). The site embodies cycles of adaptation through commercial interests that echo the modernist ideals of visibility and openness, as once imagined in London’s Crystal Palace (1851–1936).
The artists in the exhibition engage with photography as a spatial medium. Many of them explore the spatial agency of images: how do photographs define, appease or contravene our everyday environments? Photography also serves as a means to explore the architecture and materiality of spaces along with social practices tied to them. The site-sensitively designed exhibition architecture places images as multisensory experiences defined by scale, material, and context.
The exhibition includes two works created on site as part of the In-Situ Residency Program. Gundega Strauberga and Leonardo Taddei have spent two months working directly within the building – their works taking shape in spring 2026, formed in response to the site and its home city: Lahti.
