Utopias Lahti + Gaudia, Vapaa akatemia, Kuvataidekoulu Taika

Imagined Realities -näyttelykokonaisuus on rakentunut osana Utopias Lahti 2023 -festivaalin pedagogista ohjelmaa kolmen lahtelaisen kuvataideoppilaitoksen kanssa: kuvataidelukio Gaudian, Vapaan akatemian ja kuvataidekoulu Taikan.

Kokonaisuus kuljettaa kävijän keskelle muutosta. Mitä muutos on? Miltä se näyttää, maistuu tai haisee? Missä muutos näkyy? Ja ketä muutokseen kuuluu? Näyttelyssä esillä olevat teokset ovat syntyneet syanotypiatyöpajoissa kevään 2023 aikana.
               
Syanotypia on 1800-luvulta peräisin oleva valokuvan vedostustekniikka, jossa kemioiden
ja UV-valon yhteisvaikutuksella kuva siirtyy valkoviivaisena siniselle taustalle. Keväällä 2023 pidetyissä työpajoissa Gaudian, Vapaan akatemian ja Taikan opiskelijat ovat pohtineet muutosta omassa lähiympäristössään. Kokeellisen vedostusprosessin myötä niin dystooppisten kuin utopististenkin tulkintojen kuvat pyrkivät rakentamään näkymää muutoksesta, sen tämänhetkisestä olemuksesta, tulevasta ja menneestä.

Työpajojen ohjaajina ovat toimineet taidekasvattaja Valtteri Heinonen ja valokuvaaja Joshua Cockroft sekä luokkien omat opettajat Eeva Kirilin-Helenius, Taina Laakkonen ja Leena Valtonen. Näyttelyn teokset on vedostettu Lahdessa valmistetulle kiertotalouspaperille ja kokonaisuus on toteutettu Minela Säätiön tuella.

Imagined Realities exhibition has been built
as a part of the Utopias Lahti 2023 festival’s pedagocial program in collaboration with three visual arts schools in Lahti: Visual Art High School Gaudia, Lahti Academy of Liberal and Fine Arts and Visual Arts School Taika.

The exhibition brings the visitor to the centre of change. What is change? How does it look, taste or smell? Where can the change be seen, and who is a part of the change? The works in the exhibition were created in cyanotype workshops during the spring of 2023.

Cyanotype is a photo printing technique from the 19th century, where with the effect of UV light on chemical coated paper, an image is transferred as a white line onto a blue background. In the workshops held in the spring of 2023, the students of Gaudia, Vapaa akatemia and Taika have considered and discussed about the change happening in their own surroundings and environment. With the experimental printing process, the images of both dystopian and utopian interpretations aim to build a view of change, its current essence, future and past.

The workshops were held by arts educator Valtteri Heinonen and photographer Joshua Cockroft with the classes own teachers Eeva Kirilin-Helenius, Taina Laakkonen and Leena Valtonen. The works in the exhibition have been printed on circular economy paper produced in Lahti and the workshops were supported by Minela Foundation.

The exhibition is open 10.5.–28.5.2023
